Star anise is a spice made from the fruit of the chinese evergreen tree lllicium verum.


Botanical Name: Lllicium verum

Common Name: Badiana, Chinese Anise, Chinese star anise, Chakra phool


Cultivation and Production: India is the World's largest producer & exporter of Star anise. In India, Arunachal Pradesh is the only state to cultivate Star anise.

In India it is mainly harvested in October to December.


Availability: Round the year.

Usage :

  • Star anise can be used whole or ground. Whole star anise usually is added to liquid destined for a slow simmer or base.
  • Despite its sweet flavor is contained in both the seeds and the star itself, star anise traditionally is used in savory recipes, particularly with meats. It often is added whole to soups, stews, and braising broths, to which it adds a sweet-licorice-peppery flavor.
